Café del Mundo

A picture of our two artists from Cafe del Mund in front of an orange background.

Their seemingly light-footed playing combines the highest sensitivity and archaic elemental forces, raging passion and delicate grace, tradition and modernity, warming melancholy and exuberant joie de vivre. Jan Pascal and Alexander Kilian, two award-winning flamenco nuevo guitarists from the south of Germany, who have dedicated themselves wholeheartedly to the music of the Spanish south. The compositions for their formation Café del mundo are based on centuries-old flamenco dances such as solea, buleria, tientos and Latin American rhythms such as salsa, rumba and samba. What is radically new, however, is the cancellation of the traditional triad of baile, cante, toque - dance, song and play. Instead, they play their colourful guitars gently in dialogue at the centre of the dramaturgy. Brilliant and captivating, the two virtuosos open up the music of the flamenco guitar to a large audience. Jan Pascal and Alexander Kilian met at a flamenco guitar workshop in 2007. Since then, they have been linked by an inspired compositional and concert career, which now regularly takes them on concert tours through Germany and neighbouring European countries with their formation Café del mundo. The album La Perla was created during a stay at La Perla, an estate in the Valencian village of La Nucia. The Café del mundo CD debut La Perla on GLM is an inspiring collection of traditional flamenco rhythms and artistic Latin jazz impressions; subtly arranged duets at the highest guitaristic level.
